O Titular do Poder Executivo, João Lourenço, defendeu a expansão da classe média acima de 60% da população, promovendo um equilíbrio entre ricos e pobres. A promessa eleitoral serviu de base para a implementação da política de combate à pobreza que, em tese, converteria, dentro de alguns anos, parte da classe baixa em classe média.

Quem recorda é o economista Edson Gonçalves, que destaca o papel da classe média enquanto promotor do desenvolvimento económico e público-alvo das estratégias da classe empresarial privada, bem como das principais políticas públicas.

“A classe média é o factor circulante da economia. A ela cabe a criação e, ao mesmo tempo, o consumo dos principais produtos e serviços existentes. É de igual modo um contribuinte fiscal activo e principal beneficiário das políticas públicas”, aclara.

Economic Development at the Mercy of a Strong Middle Class

The middle class is the link between the lower and upper layers of society, performing several key functions that contribute to the progress and stability of the country. In the specific context of Angola, the weakening of the middle class can have significant implications for development.

The Head of the Executive Branch, João Lourenço, has advocated for the expansion of the middle class to over 60% of the population, promoting a balance between the rich and poor. The electoral promise served as the basis for the implementation of the poverty reduction policy which, in theory, would transform part of the lower class into the middle class within a few years.

Economist Edson Gonçalves recalls the role of the middle class as a promoter of economic development and the target audience of private business strategies, as well as key public policies.

"The middle class is the circulating factor of the economy. It is responsible for the creation and consumption of the main existing products and services. It is also an active tax contributor and the main beneficiary of public policies," he clarifies.
